Description

Denario. Acuñada el 68 d.C. CLODIO MACER. CARTAGO (?). Anv.: ROMA S.C. Cabeza de Roma a derecha. Rev.: L. CLODI. MACRI. Trofeo. 3, 96 grs. (EBC-)/MBC+ / Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa who revolted in the time of Nero. We are situated in the spring of AD 68, the Clodio revolt in North Africa added to Galba´s in Hispania, apparently without cooperation between them. The bigger threat to Nero´s regime was the fact that he controlled the grain supply to Rome from the fertile African Provinces, with his power base in Ammaedara. In October of the same year Galba made him capture and execute. His coins show his spirit and the purpose of his cause, to free Rome from Nero´s tyranny. His style on the obverse consists of features among which it can be highlight the use of the formula S.C. (Senatus Consulto) in all his coins and also the absence of his portrait in all the types except the last one, in which he appears without laurel wreath and instead Rome´s head in its traditional form with crested helmet. On the reverse, however, shows a design more warlike with a trophy of weapons and armor fallen into disuse since the civil wars in the 40 BC. His coins show us he generally used poor labor with rough engravings and dies little elaborate. Corrosions cleaned but extremely rare and almost extremely fine / choice very fine. C-9; RIC-31; BMC-p.287, nota. Adq. Herrero - Diciembre 2001.
